More funds. The same hidden exposure?

Understand what diversification measures beyond the number of holdings.

THE IDEA TO KEEP

Diversification is about underlying exposures, not the number of account statements or fund names.

Look through the wrapper

Two funds with different names can own many of the same companies. An ETF is a structure; it does not automatically describe the breadth of its holdings. A sector fund may concentrate exposure even when it holds dozens of securities.

A simple overlap example

Imagine Fund A and Fund B each place 20% of their assets in the same company. Splitting money equally between them still creates a 20% exposure to that company: half multiplied by 20%, plus half multiplied by 20%. Holding two funds has not halved this particular exposure. This fictional example ignores price changes and fund costs.

Consider different dimensions

Company, sector, country, currency, and asset type can each concentrate risk. Assets may also react similarly in a stressed market. Diversification can reduce exposure to a single failure, but it cannot eliminate market losses or guarantee a positive outcome.

Read the documents

Holdings, investment objectives, and risk disclosures explain what a fund actually contains. Their dates matter because portfolios change. A list of tickers alone does not establish suitability, and this framework is not a recommendation for a particular allocation or fund.

A global perspective

Fund availability, legal structures, tax rules, and investor protections vary by market. A familiar name or ticker in one country may refer to a different product elsewhere.
