Retirement / Evergreen
Retirement is an income question.
Look beyond one savings number to understand the whole picture.
Understanding retirement starts with the relationship between spending, income sources, and uncertainty.
Separate a balance from an income
An account balance is a stock of money at a point in time. Retirement spending is a flow over many years. Connecting the two requires assumptions about longevity, investment returns, inflation, taxes, and withdrawals. One large number cannot answer all of those questions.
Map the sources
Depending on the country and employment history, income may come from public pensions, employer arrangements, personal savings, or continued work. Different sources have different eligibility ages, payment rules, and inflation adjustments. Some depend on investment performance; others follow a benefit formula.
A gap is a starting point
In a fictional example, monthly spending of 2,400 currency units and pension income of 1,700 leave a gap of 700. That arithmetic helps define the problem, but it does not tell us the portfolio needed. A 20-year retirement and a 35-year retirement expose that gap to different uncertainties. Taxes and occasional large costs can change it too.
Ask better questions
Which income is expected, which is contractually defined, and which can change? What happens if retirement begins earlier? How are healthcare and housing funded? These questions explain why generic retirement multiples are only simplified illustrations, rather than personal answers.
A global perspective
Retirement ages, pension portability, tax treatment, and benefit indexation are country-specific. Use official pension statements and local rules when applying any concept.

Make the idea stick.
Mark complete when you are ready. Reaching the end alone does not mark a lesson complete.
